Hey, hello. How are you? What’s the good news?

My name is Akila and I am delighted to introduce myself as Ex Fabula’s latest Programming Coordinator.

Growing up in Milwaukee in the Metcalfe/Washington Park area, I come from a family of painters, and women who always seem to be creating and cooking. Though my background first began studying music, it later developed into an interest in filmmaking. Not a shift I could have predicted at the time, but it made sense when I fell in love with how film’s marriage between audio and visual combines with stylized storytelling; the results can be highly dynamic. Like poetry on a grand scale. Think Wong Kar Wai, Spike Lee, Jim Jarmuch, Chicken Run. Film is a place where you can literally create your dreams or report an untold story. (Of course, with the help of many others and enough funding!) Like storytelling, there’s so much to explore.

But, back to basics.

I am a Leo who does not enjoy the stage. But I like to be around it and behind the scenes. Over the years, I have found ways to work with performances and uplift those who do want to hold a microphone, and it has kept me engaged in local productions, films, festivals, galleries, and recently Christmas planning with grandma. I like to encourage others when I see their light. I am resourceful and can usually be found attached to a clipboard, silently directing, dressed in all black. Or a statement coat. Some gals have shoes, or bags. Or great nails. I’m coats.

But I didn’t come here to tell you about my closet.

I am truly excited to be a part of a team as considerate and thoughtful towards their community-based programming as Ex Fabula. Over the years, they have proven to make lasting memories across the city and carve out spaces that weren’t there before. Their ethics speak volumes to the audiences they connect with, and I can’t wait to help strengthen their relationships and build out great partnerships. I’m looking forward to an inspiring Season 18.
