Jen H: Recently, my 17-year-old started destroying their room, punching holes in walls, kicking door off hinges, smashing windows, and breaking lamps and stuff. Stop attempting school and started smoking weed daily. When they implied that life might not be worth living, I made the tough choice to call the police and have them taken to a psych hospital for a week to keep them safe. How to navigate this was completely unknown to me, especially when it was disclosed that my kiddo was experiencing extreme gender dysphoria. So – not gay – as I had previously believed – but transgender. As I was tasked with assisting my kiddo in transition from female to male – I called upon and found support from SO many people in the community. We are on a good path now – the unknown is becoming known. <3
A closeted Trans Kid- I know when I look in the mirror and smile, I don’t see a girl. My problem is getting my parents and everyone else to see it.
Kim- Once I went to Lloyd Barbee Montessori. I was sitting with a couple of 8-year olds and they began to fight about me. “He’s a boy,” said the boy. “She’s a girl,” said the girl. He’s a boy! She’s a girl! He’s a boy! She’s a girl! Finally, one of them asked me who was right. I said, “Well, I’m a girl, but I’m kind of a little bit of both. “Okay,” they said.

The Butterfly Collective
A social outreach platform for the QTPOC community in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The Butterfly Collective’s mission is to serve black and brown trans and gender nonconforming folks that are in dire need of support, and connect those to a network of resources & events.
